Song of the Week, 3/28: The Wonder Years- "Logan Circle"

Groundhog's Day. The end of Daylight Savings Time. Ash Wednesday. All of these are signs of Spring in today's culture. But if you're not superstitious, then a groundhog won't tell you when Winter ends. Daylight Savings Time is just a cruel joke the government plays on sleep-deprived college students. And depending on your religious affiliation, Ash Wednesday only applies to a few people.

What I'm trying to get at is this: the only real way to signify the coming of Spring is the first day of Spring, which took place this year on Tuesday, March 20. However, for fans of The Wonder Years (and there's a lot more of us around nowadays), the coming of Spring is signified by one act of public interest: turning on the fountain at Logan Circle.

Everyone has their own walk in life, and that walk leads, inevitably, to times of struggle. Dan "Soupy" Campbell found himself in one of those positions one Winter, but when Spring came, and he felt his life was headed in a positive direction, he penned the now infamous line: "They turned on the fountain today, at Logan Circle/I felt something in me change." On the surface, this line appears simple, but with a band like The Wonder Years, still waters always run the deepest. A few times, I've wondered (pun intended) what it could have been about that fountain that inspired Campbell and changed his mood so greatly. But I found out something: it really doesn't matter.

The point is, we all face our own struggles in life. Big and small, catastrophic or minuscule, there are all kinds of varieties. But that's what spring is about: shedding the weight (both literal and figurative) from winter, embracing the changing of the season, and applying to make a few improvements of your own. If a band like The Wonder Years has taught me anything, it's that no one problem is enough to break a person. So let it all go, readers, and embrace the warm weather. You don't have to revamp your lifestyle, or change everything about you; but if you do decide to "fix" something, keep an open mind, and don't let anything get the best of you. The warm weather is coming, and Summer's on it's way.

Until then, here's a video of the perfect song for the coming of Spring, "Logan Circle":

Happy Spring, everyone!
