Who they are: Do you really need me to tell you who
Yellowcard is at this point? They’ve been a band for 15 years this year and
haven’t slowed down with age at all. In fact, they seem to be just hitting
their stride. The pop-rock/punk outfit from Los Angeles, California went on a
hiatus in 2008, but did their reunion the right way: getting back to work like
they had never been away. If you’ve followed this blog since we came back from
a hiatus of our own then you may already know: we like Yellowcard here at Keep
Calm and Carry on… a lot. (They've already had a "song of the week" and the #13 album of last year for our show.)
Why They’re Band of the Week: Well for starters, the band
released a single, “Always Summer,” on May 22. The song is the lead single from
their new album titled Southern Air, which is being released on August 14. The
song was met with so much fanfare that the exclusive stream posted on
absolutepunk.net crashed the site for 20 minutes. The song is now available at
all digital music retailers and it is awesome. Yellowcard hasn’t released a
summer anthem this good since “Ocean Avenue” and that isn’t even hyperbole,
that’s fact. And what better live setting is there to play summer anthems than
pop-punk summer camp itself, Warped Tour? Yellowcard is also playing every date
of the Warped Tour, which kicked off Saturday in Salt Lake City, Utah. Keep
Calm and Carry On will be attending the tour on July 13th, and
Yellowcard is certainly one of our most anticipated bands on a stacked lineup
this year. The band has also been newsworthy for some health-related reasons.
Lead singer Ryan Key recently underwent foot surgery on the bottom of his foot
and he has said he could possibly have to sit down on stage for the first few
Warped dates. Meanwhile, violinist Sean Mackin is dealing with an even more
serious medical issue: he was diagnosed with Thyroid Cancer in December of 2011
and he has been battling it since, radiation therapy and surgery. But Mackin
has decided to join the band on Warped as well. The fact that the band has
decided to honor their commitment to the tour, even if staying home would have
been an easy and understandable alternative, is a testament to the commitment
that Yellowcard shows to their craft.
What I should listen to: Did I mention they had a new single
out? It’s called “Always Summer” and you should listen to it because it is, to
put it simply, really, really good.
