Who are they: California post-hardcore band Thrice has achieved
something that very few bands can claim: they have remained a consistent band
for over a decade, evolving and progressing each step of the way. Ever since
releasing Identity Crisis, no listener can ever say that Thrice released the
same album twice. Each album expanded upon the band’s sound, making them one of
the most legendary in the scene. Having released seven full length albums (if
one includes the entire Alchemy Index as one), Thrice has been one of the most
prolific song-writing forces over the past ten-plus years.
Why they are band of the week: Anytime a beloved band
announces that they are embarking on a farewell tour, a great deal of publicity
will arise from it. Thrice is one of the most beloved bands around, so
understandably their Spring tour, which they announced would be their last, has
generated a large amount of buzz. The
band announced the dates for the tour, which is scheduled to kick off on May 4,
in San Diego, CA. Dates can be found here. The tour will cap Thrice’s career
with a 7-date stand in their home state of California. Thrice has said that
they’re trying to make the tour something special, as evidenced by a few news
items about it. First, the band posted a link to a survey, asking fans what
songs they would like to hear played on the tour, and fans had the option to
pick from all of the band’s albums and even some B-sides. Next, the opening
acts for the tour, O’Brother and Animals As Leaders (both good friends of
Thrice) were announced. And early this morning, Thrice announced that the tour
would be recorded for a live album, which will be released in the Fall.
What you need to hear: “Anthology” a track off the band’s
most recent album, Major/Minor is a testament
to just how great Thrice’s music is at their peak. Featuring references to
older Thrice tracks, it also serves as a great bookend to the band’s career.
